Fall 2009

Trombonist Eileen Meyer Russell performed the Lyric Fanfare (1993) for trombone and piano on October 20th (accompanied by Kiyoshi Tamagawa) as part of a guest artist recital at the University of Oregon.

Five Miniatures (1983) for flute and euphonium will be performed on piccolo and F tuba (!) at The University of Oklahoma in Norman in the School of Music's Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall on Tuesday, November 3rd at 8:00pm as part of a concert of chamber music for brass instruments.

Robert Kozánek gave virtuoso performances of the new trombone concerto on September 25th & 26th in Kroměříž, Czech Republic in the beautiful Assembly Hall of the archbishop's castle (a UNESCO world heritage site). He was ably assisted by his father, Viktor Kozánek, conducting the P. J. Vejvanovský Conservatory Orchestra. Robert asked me to write the concerto in honor of the conservatory's 60th anniversary when we met in Slovakia last year.

Twenty-two years after it was submitted as DG's master's degree thesis at American University, the  concerto for euphonium and orchestra is finally getting a public performance (piano reduction version). Euphonium soloist Richard Demy will be performing it as part of his graduate recital at George Mason University's Harris Theatre in Fairfax, Virginia on May 9, 2009 at 3:00 pm. Admission is free. For more information, call the George Mason University Music Department at (703) 993-1380.

PRESS CLIPPINGS

"Colorful percussion writing....Gaines demonstrates a keen affinity for orchestration. Woodwinds and brass are vividly exploited; percussion applied with as much subtlety as power."  Tim Smith, Baltimore Sun

"This is very attractive music....Without ever sounding like a pastiche of styles, Gaines' music succeeds in creating its own approachable style, with impressive lyricism....and a real sense of power and purpose"  Records International

"I cannot imagine a more powerful mix of words, images, and music....People who know nothing of Massoud or Afghanistan will be stunned by the sheer power of the composition, and people who are familiar with these topics will be reduced to tears....a tremendous piece of work."  Sebastian Junger, commenting on "The Lion of Panjshir (Symphony No. 2)"
